The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of the oldest institutions of higher education in Hong Kong. Its origins can be traced back to the Hong Kong Government Technical College, established in 1937, which was the first government-funded institution in Hong Kong to provide engineering education. It was renamed the Hong Kong Technical College in 1947. The Hong Kong Polytechnic was established in 1972. In 1994, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Ordinance came into effect, and the institution was renamed The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
